Model, contributing editor, and American TV presenter, Alexa Chung takes the world by storm with her clever fashion takes and personal style. Although she may have a typical model body—tall, slender and fair skinned, she does not dress as a typical fashionista. Her boyish combat boots, boyfriend cut denim shorts and choppy short hair causes her to have a rougher, less feminine look. Her look in this spread contrasts sharply with her edgy demeanor.

Girly, feminine and chic are three words to best describe Alexa’s most recent Teen Vogue fashion spread in October 2011. Photographer Paola Kudacki posed Chung in the popular Long Island beach, Southampton. Using the concept of an Indian summer for the shoot, Kudacki captured the essence of summer freedom, childhood dreams, and Chung’s fashion forward nature.

Below, Chung is showed posing on a carousel. Chung is clinging onto a golden pole with one hand while doing the classic knee pop. Her simple black dress is used as a background for her ravishing yellow fur coat. Her chained necklace and combat-esque boots add flavor to the overall outfit. Chung is staring straight at the camera as though she has a mysterious thought going on in her mind. Her hair is quickly tossed with mousse—simple, yet elegant.

This next photo is an up close of Chung and a mysterious male figure. Though Chung’s outfit can barely be seen, she is wearing a crème colored turtleneck that flows into the background color of the sand. Chung’s hair is placed up in a ballerina bun with her bangs flowing on top of her face. She is staring at the camera in an almost seductive way. The background of the beach is a blur and blends in with Chung’s skin tone.

The final photo from this shoot is a close up of Chung. Only one of her eyes can be seen, her short, simple, brown hair covers the other. She is staring at the camera and smiling which brings out the brightness of the yellow flower she is holding. Her white shirt pops out with the green background and the black bows add a touch of girly essence.

White has always been known to be a color reserved for Spring and Summer. As seen in this year’s Spring 2012 collections, many designers chose to incorporate neatly tailored, clean white looks. In many cases white can represent purity and simplicity and by pairing highly tailored designs with fresh white, designers can create an ultra chic, clean look.

For Jill Sander’s Spring 2012 collection, high collars were combined with tight fitting tailored dresses and skirts. This gave the collection a very modern, elegant look. Karl Lagerfeld, like other designers, also included elegant all white pieces into the Spring 2012 collection for Chanel. The beginning of his collection was reserved for entirely white designs. This decision allowed his collection to transform throughout the show starting out with simplified white designs and finishing with dazzling highly embellished pieces.

The scandal of the week comes courtesy of J.Crew creative director, Jenna Lyons. A feature in the latest J. Crew catalogue and on the brand’s online store titled “Saturday with Jenna” shows Lyons painting her 3-year-old son Beckett’s toenails bright pink. Lyons was attacked by psychiatrist and Fox News contributor Dr. Keith Ablow posted in an editorial on Fox News’ website, “This is a dramatic example of the way that our culture is being encouraged to abandon all trappings of gender identity.” Meanwhile, Erin Brown of the Media Research Center, called the picture “blatant propaganda celebrating transgendered children.” You decide for yourself. Last week, we told you that Christophe Decarnin has left Balmain. This week, rumor has it that an unknown will replace Decarnin at the legendary house. British Elle, who spoke with a source from the house, reported they plan on choosing an unknown, just like Decarnin was before he started there. “The owners want to support lesser-known design talent,” the source said. An announcement will be made “in the next two or three days.” [Fashionista]

Christian Louboutin is suing Yves Saint Lauren over a pair of red shoes created with matching red soles. Louboutin maintains that red-soled shoes have been a trademark of the company since 1992, according to the lawsuit, the New York Daily News reports.

The Advertising Standards Authority has approved a Miu Miu ad from the Spring/Summer 2011 campaign that came under fire in the UK when some believed the model portrayed to be too thin. The ad shows 23-year-old Polish model, Kasia Struss, sitting in a chair in a low-cut dress with dramatic lighting. [The Telegraph]

Lady Gaga is the cover girl for the May issue of Harper’s Bazaar, and she’s featured wearing the same face and shoulder prosthetics she debuted at the Grammy Awards in February. Naturally, Derek Blasberg asked her about them while interviewing her, and naturally, Gaga insists that they’re natural. “They’re not prosthetics, they’re bones,” she said. “They've always been inside of me, but I have been waiting for the right time to reveal to the universe who I truly am. Junior fashion design major, Grace O’Meara, was spotted wearing a chic outfit with her signature edgy touches. She offset her preppy J.Crew button up and cardigan with her bold color choices. The bright green cardigan added the perfect bold spring touch to liven up her blue outfit. O’Meara added a touch of masculinity to her feminine outfit with her, Vera Wang Lavender label combat boots (she found them on sale!)

She also showed off her hand made necklace made from fabric scraps. But, this handmade piece looked anything, but inexpensive; her careful construction resembled more expensive designer pieces. The vibrant piece goes with almost any outfit and adds a pop of color. These edgy choices make Grace look put together, yet unique.

After Christophe Decarnin’s bizarre absence from his Autumn/Winter 2011 show for Balmain fueled rumors of a drug addiction and a stint in a mental hospital, Balmain announced in a press release on Wednesday that he has left the label, according to the New York Times. A Fashionista article speculates that he will probably be replaced by Melanie Ward, who worked for Helmut Lang and replaced Emmanuel Alt at Balmain three weeks before the Autumn/Winter 2011 show.

Carine Roitfeld is adding another freelancing job to her list: styling the Chanel fall campaign. She styled model, Freja Beha Erichsen, for a shoot photographed by Karl Lagerfeld, according to Women’s Wear Daily.

American Apparel is in deep trouble. Aside from the numerous allegations of sexual abuse surrounding company CEO Dov Charney, it also seems as though the company is having financial problems. According to the New York Post, the company lost $86 million last year and might have to file for bankruptcy, according to PE Hub. But Charney told the Post, “This is going to be a year of renewal for American Apparel.”

Dani Stahl, style director at Nylon is stepping down from this role for an at-large position at the magazine so she can have time to work on some of her other projects, which include working as a stylist and designing for jewelry line, Lia Sophia, according to the New York Post.

In magazine news of the week, Style.com, which is owned by Condé Nast, is set to launch a print magazine to accompany its website. The first magazine will be released sometime in October, according to Fashionista.

Fashion Czar: Fashion Scavenger Hunt

COM 500: Producing Cross-Platform Communications is launching a Fashion Scavenger Hunt at the S.I. Newhouse 5^th Annual Fashion Communications Milestone Fashion Show this Friday, at 7 p.m., in the lobby of Newhouse 1. The hunt will run from April 1 to April 24^th.

The Fashion and Beauty Communications Milestone program brings together the business side of fashion and communications at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications with the creative side of fashion at the College of Visual and Performing Arts. COM 500 hopes the scavenger hunt will bring attention to the program and give students a chance to participate with fashion on campus. All Syracuse University students are eligible to play and can register for the hunt through the program’s website: http://cnystyle-dev.syr.edu/.

A new clue will be posted to the website, Facebook, and Twitter each day during the hunt. After receiving the clue, participants can search for the items on campus and take a photo of what they find. In order for the photos to count, participants must upload the them to Facebook and tag them as SUFashionPromotion. Photos can also be e-mailed to the website. Participants have the chance to win two tickets to the Senior Fashion Show on Friday, April 29^th and goodies from various stores in Syracuse.

The class with hang posters around campus that feature different clues and QR codes. The codes can be scanned from a smart phone and will make the site accessible anywhere on campus.

All rules for the game are listed on the website. For more information, please visit the COM 500 table after the fashion show tomorrow night.

Scott Schuman, famous for his mega-popular blog The Sartorialist, incited a hailstorm of fury Wednesday after posting pictures of fashion blogger Angelica Ardasheva and calling her “bigger” and “sturdy.” The post had 1,426 comments at the time this ‘Cuse Clothes Line post was written. Many of the commentators were unhappy that this girl was considered heavier or plus sized. Schuman updated the post by saying, “I love a post like this. It creates a real and important conversation. A number of the commenters are upset by the word ‘curvy.’ They feel I should have used the word ‘normal.’ However, normal is relative. There is a young lady on my team who is 5'0", and another who is 5'9". Which would be ‘normal’?” Ardasheva responded to the controversy on her blog by saying that she thought she has a “normal body” but “did not mind [Schuman’s comments] at all.”

Knockoff versions of designer bags are not a new trend, but designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler are not happy that Target is making knockoffs of their PS1 bag under their Mossimo line. “The attitude, the slouch of the bag — they got the weight really right,” Hernandez told the New York Times. This is especially an issue because Proenza Schouler has collaborated with Target on their Go International Collection. “So our product is in Target right now, and then this bag comes out. It’s just disappointing, especially from someone we worked with,” said Shirley Cook, Proenza Schouler’s chief executive.

Carine Roitfeld, the former editor-in-chief of Vogue Paris, is now working as a guest editor and stylist for Barneys New York. She’ll work on its fall ad campaign, catalogue and window displays, according to Women’s Wear Daily.

Super stylist Rachel Zoe and husband Roger Berman welcomed their first child, Skyler Morrison Berman on Thursday, March 24. “Thank you all so much for your love! @rbermanus and I couldn't be happier with little Skyler Morrison in our arms...he is everything,” Zoe tweeted Thursday. Designer Confidential: "The Inspired Rookie - Jess Wolfe"

Designer Confidential highlights the work of SU's greatest fashion asset: its student designers.

Jess Wolfe didn’t always know she wanted to be a fashion designer. She entered Syracuse University as a ceramics major. While taking a textiles class during the second semester of her freshman year, she fell head over heels for fashion design and has never looked back.

“I love ceramics. But it didn’t really support the lifestyle I wanted. After taking the textiles class I could really see a future for myself in the fashion industry,” Wolfe says.

To catch up to her classmates in the fashion program, Wolfe has had to double up on studio electives and work extra hard.

“It is challenging, but I’m learning a lot. It is definitely worth it,” she says.

An extensive history in retail has helped expose her to the ins and outs of the industry. Wolfe has worked at Hollister Co., Pac Sun, Plato’s Closet and is presently employed at Clinique. She sees herself working in the fashion industry with similarly large companies as a ready-to-wear designer.

“I would love to work for someone like Michael Kors,” Wolfe says. “He’s talented and affordable.”

Wolfe is currently working on a midterm for her Fashion Illustration class. The project involves designing a 12-piece collection around two opposing elements. Wolfe was given two pieces of fabric-a leather and an orange knit. Her spring collection combines flirty feminine looks with an edgy rocker aesthetic, relying on tweed, knit, and leather fabrics to give the collection a sweet but rugged feel.

“When looking at my final work for this collection I see my drawing has... developed a lot from the beginning of the year. I really have learned a lot in only a year,” Wolfe proclaims.

Dream Job: To work for a famous designer in the ready-to-wear department. She notes she would also be interested in working as a celebrity stylist.

“I think it would be a really exciting job. I love Rachel Zoe and I think her job is amazing” Wolfe states.

Designer Confidential: She switched into fashion after completing an inspiring project for her Fiber Arts class, which found her looking at a Christian Dior collection inspired by Geishas.

Rag Report: Summer Time and the Fashion is Easy

Rag Report dives under the covers of fashion publications to rant or rave about all the glossy goodness.

This month’s Glamour makes me yearn for days filled to the brim with sunshine and long summer nights. In a spread shot by Max Farago and modeled by Marloes Horst, different summer trends fill the pages. The one thing they all have in common? Vibrant colors.

In the first photo Horst exemplifies a perfect balance between girly and sporty. Her Christopher Kane neon lace jacket and skirt are fun and lively with a touch of feminism. The A.L.C. khaki top acts as a neutralizer between the two shocking colors, and her Adidas Originals give the outfit a laid back feel. Her wide smile and playful stance express the feelings of summer.

The next photo is more laid back and casual. Here, Horst wears a bold sunset orange skirt with a simple plain white tee both by Jil Sander. She casually leans against the rail with palm trees in the background, reiterating the summer season. Her facial expression is carefree as to mimic the attitude of the season.

For this photo, the mood is once again playful but with a sense of confidence. Horst wears a yellow top paired with slightly dark yellow pants both by Max Mara. Her Soludos shoes complement the yellow and seem to bring the island feel to her outfit. She sits casually on the chair with one leg up as she sips on her beverage. Her eyes seem to invite the reader to comment on the bold one color choice.

As I look out the window and see gray skies and puddles created by the recent rain, I can’t help but daydream about the summer complete with colors that come alive and bold fashion trends that make you seen in a huge crowd.

In my recent travels I purchased a pair a scalloped shorts (that are unfortunately no longer available) from Madewell and am absolutely enamored by this trend. The spring collections of D&G and Bebe had pieces with the scalloped feature. Scalloped shorts offer versatility as they can be dressed up or be worn in a casual setting. Most are designed with comfort in mind, including light fabrics, elastic waistbands and are loosing fitting. While shorts are the most common items that feature the scalloped effect, Forever21 now has a mini with a scalloped hem. The temperatures will rise, eventually, until then, start filling your closets with this trend.

Film legend, as well as fashion and beauty icon, Elizabeth Taylor passed away Wednesday at the age of 79. She was famous for films such as “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” “Cleopatra” and “Father of the Bride” and for the sultry glamour she radiated in her youth. As she grew older, she became known for her over-the-top looks. She was also the first celebrity to have a successful celebrity fragrance, White Diamonds.

The CFDA nominations were announced last week. Alexander Wang, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler and Marc Jacobs are the nominees for Womenswear Designer of the Year. Other honorees include Phoebe Philo of Céline, who is set to receive the International Award, and Lady Gaga, who will receive the Fashion Icon Award.

Designer drama! In the wake of the John Galliano’s dismissal from Dior following his anti-Semetic outburst in a Parisian restaurant, many of his fellow designers have been weighing in on the situation. Isaac Mizrahi didn’t hold back with his comments. “It can’t be tolerated,” Mizrahi told New York Magazine. “I never really liked what he did so much. I hope he doesn’t work again.”

In the aftermath of the devastation in Japan, the fashion world has been working to provide aid to the suffering: Uniqlo donated $17 million in aid and another $8.6 million in clothes to the relief effort, and also set up clothing donation bins in some of their stores; designers like Tory Burch and Kate Spade have created merchandise that will have 100% of their profits going to Japan; and Forever 21 donated 100% of their sales on January 18 to the relief effort.

The delicate elegance found in lace has been becoming an increasingly popular trend for spring and summer collections. It started with Dolce and Gabbana’s spring ready-to-wear collection. This collection was a predominantly white collection with most of their garments incorporating elegant white lace as detail work into their designs. The theme of the collection was possessions new and old that a new bride might pack away before she begins a period in her life. The fabrics used for this collection were very loose, airy fabrics like linen, sheer silks, and crocheted material.

This incorporation of white lace has also spread to other designer’s pieces. It seems to give garments a summery touch and can also be considered dressy or casual. White lace can be used to give garments notions of springtime, femininity, pureness and sophistication.

Yet, while appearing sexy and chic on the runway this trend can sometimes come off as old fashioned if overdone. To avoid looking a bit doily, incorporate a casual piece into the look. For example, with a white lace dress throw on a denim jacket or vest to play down the ultra feminine aspect of the lace dress. Also, it is important to wear lace with clean unembellished pieces. The lace itself on a garment is the embellishment so rock the lace with a clean solid colored piece.

A new week, a new scandal: a former American Apparel employee is suing the CEO Dov Charney, claiming that he forced her to have sex with him repeatedly over an eight month period. This is not the first time Charney has been accused of sexual advances towards employees, but none of the previous cases were proven. This is definitely the worst accusation against him we’ve seen yet.

Super stylist Rachel Zoe tops The Hollywood Reporter’s list of the most powerful stylists in Hollywood. This can’t really come as a shock to anyone; Zoe has transformed herself from the little-known stylist of Demi Moore and Anne Hathaway to a branded machine through her show The Rachel Zoe Project and her clothing lines. Also featured on the list is Kate Young, Natalie Portman’s stylist, who comes in at number two, and Petra Flanner, stylist to Zoe Saldana and Emma Stone, at number three. See the complete list here.

Designer Confidential: The Free Spirit

Designer Confidential highlights the work of SU's greatest fashion asset: its student designers.

Isadora Duncan remains to be one of the world’s most influential dancers-often referred to as the creator of modern dance. Her spirit has inspired countless creatives, even following her untimely death in 1927.

Senior designer Marteal Boniello chose Isadora Duncan as the muse for her final student collection. She focuses on the aspects of Isadora’s life as well as the events surrounding her death. Marteal states, “...[Duncan's] life [was] ended tragically by a scarf getting caught around her neck. [So] I began looking at neck braces and neck rings, and found the Kayan Lahwi tribe of women in Thailand to be my main inspiration.” She also looked to the work of Czech painter Alphonse Mucha to inspire the color palette of her collection.

Boniello incorporates a variety of silks into her collection as well as, woven stretch cotton, leather, and gold weave novelty fabrics as accents. Her color palette includes light, muted colors like mauve, taupe, cream, grayish purple and grayish blue, mixed with orange and gold. “It sounds strange in writing but the colors look very beautiful together,” Boniello explains.

Boniello has interned at Badgley Mischka for the past two years. For students in search of a fashion internship, Boniello suggests simply emailing your resume and contact information to prospective employers- that's what worked for her with Badgley Mischka. Boniello is a fan of many designers but her favorite fashion designer is the late Alexander McQueen. “He [was] a genius,” Boniello says.

Dream Job:

Boniello’s dream job is to be a fashion illustrator for a famous designer. Her position would involve sketching looks for collections and putting together inspiration boards among other things. “It’s a very challenging job, but I’d love to do it, “ Boniello says.

Designer Confidential:

“I would have to say I think my work looks better on paper then in the actual garment form,” Boniello laughs. Yet, if Boniello pursues her dream job as an illustrator this may work to her advantage.

John Galliano was dismissed from Dior Tuesday after a video of the designer making anti-Semitic statements in a Paris bar went viral, according to the New York Times.

The designer released a statement Wednesday apologizing for his behavior: “Anti-Semitism and racism have no part in our society. I unreservedly apologise for my behaviour in causing any offence.”

Galliano could now face prison time, according to Fashionista.

After watching the Oscars last week, mainly for the red carpet, I got excited for spring cocktail dresses. Some of my favorite looks were from Gwyneth Paltrow, Natalie Portman, Reese Witherspoon and Scarlett Johansson. Take these looks, neutrals and magentas, belts and bands, and pick out some rocking cocktail dresses for spring.

Below are some of my favorite cocktail wear for this season from BHLDN, Anthropologie’s new bridal shop. I know, a “bridal shop” isn’t exactly where you go looking for cocktail dresses, but BHLDN has some great looks that are sure to getting people talking at the party. Yes, they are a bit pricey, but are worth it, right?

In this month’s Vogue, readers are exposed to precious metals, like gold, stitched into fabrics creating a fairytale essence. Bruce Weber photographs model Karen Elson in a spread titled “The Enchanted Garden.” The looks are magical and as delicate as the nature that surrounds them.

In the first photo, Elson wears a Tom Ford metal-and-silk jacket layered over an Oscar de la Renta lace-trimmed silk blouse. Her tousled red curls illuminate in the sunlight and mimic the precious metals in her jacket. She has plump deep berry lips and holds an intense gaze. Her features are soft, and therefore give the photograph a whimsical tone.

The next photo features Elson in a Tao Comme des Garçons cotton jacket and matching dress. The white cotton and floral stitching give her an angelic look. The baby lamb makes her appear pure and innocent. Once again, her radiant locks reflect the sunlight and form a halo of light around her head. The background is blurred so she is the focal point of the photograph.

Elson blends into the trees with a Valentino embroidered tulle dress in her next photo. Unlike the previous two photos, her face is in the shadows, making the dress the center of attention. The gold threads sparkle in the sunlight and instantly catch the eye. This photo is intriguing because Elson’s arms blend in with the trees. Her lean body is elongated as she offers a dream catcher above her head.

This spread offers a sense of magic, innocence and purity. The fabrics sparkle and shine like the sun that reflects them. Nature sets a peaceful mood and creates a relaxing atmosphere. A walk in the Enchanted Garden seems to be the perfect way to spend an afternoon.

Blair Waldorf, ahem, Leighton Meester takes to the pages of Lithuania magazine L’Officel in the March issue. Donning the latest trends of bold, bright colors, Meester looks nothing less than regal in this editorial.

Meester takes our breath away in this photo. We love how simple the photo is because it exemplifies her stunning beauty as well as the Yves Saint Laurent jumpsuit. The bright orange color compliments her skin tone, perfectly. Even though Meester’s eyes aren’t directed toward the camera, we still are engaged with the image.

Hair slicked back in a chignon, coral lipstick and neutral eye shadow, Meester looks perfectly content in the photo. The glimmer in her eye and subtle tilt of the lips transforms this image into something magical. Meester wears the Max Mara outfit with a grace and confidence that speaks volumes.

The editorial spread isn’t the only images with a gray backdrop. L’Officiel uses the same background on its cover and, we absolutely love it! Meester’s posture is slouched yet her facial expression is poised. The Lanvin top and Jil Sander skirt works in this cover as orange type is around her. I guess we know what colors are going to be a hit for spring!

Overall, the editorial is clean and simple. The photographer manages to capture Meester’s true beauty without the addition of over exaggerated makeup or hair. The background complimented the simplicity the photographer conveyed in the images.

This spring collection featured a refreshing, different trend. All-white outfits are now all the rage. The essential little black dress has transformed into the little white dress or LWD as fashionistas like to call them. In this month’s Elle magazine, a whole spread is dedicated to the white ensemble.

The color white is traditionally thought to represent purity and innocence. Not so here. Model So Young Kang’s face and body language present a different image. Her outfit is buttoned up, but she is not. Even the background, featuring L.A.’s public transit, projects a gritty element. An all-white outfit is no longer only for those who don’t get down and dirty.

What can be a better backdrop to show off a white outfit than a seedy motel in Los Angeles? The open back of this Bottega Veneta jacket and the garter-like stockings peeking out of white shorts are anything but innocent.

A crown of thorns paired with this white outfit is tough. Kang’s pose shows that she has attitude. The lip-shaped chair adds to the fierce, fearless disposition. This photo solidifies the point of the spread: the new white is rough and tumble, not afraid to get dirty.

Elle shows us that white can be dirty and very sexy.

But why not rock this trend with a statement piece. Pair a fur vest or jacket with basic leggings and motorcycle boots for a bold, trendy look. From shaggy to soft there are different textures and colors of fur to fit every style.

Rag Report: Highlight the World With Vibrant Colors

The grey Syracuse days are complemented by dark jackets, winter accessories, and chunky snow boots. However, after flipping through the March issue of Elle, the editorial, shot by Terry Tsiolis and styled by Lester Garcia, was dedicated solely to bright colors. Not only did it brighten my day (both literally and metaphorically) but also gave me something to look forward to.

The photos portray a sense of edginess and rebellion. In this photo, the model not only wears a Versace silk jacket and skirt, but also a fierce expression. She bites her lip, and her eyebrows, full and bold, frame her intense gaze. Her short hair is freely styled and sends out a bold statement. Around her wrist she wears a chunky Mary Katrantzou crystal bracelet that reflects light and adds more color to her outfit.

This next photo has a more mellow tone to it. The model is in a peculiar pose that resembles something a child would do. Her gaze is subdued and her hair is spiked. The deep royal blue Prada stretch jacket and forest greed Prada cotton skirt provide a rich contrast that gives the outfit a sophisticated look. Her Prada wedged heels give the outfit a playful feel that mimics the pose.

In this photo, we see a combination of vibrant colors from head to toe. The model is wearing a magenta viscose-blend bodysuit by Max Mara with green Rochas silk shorts and highlighter yellow Christian Louboutin sandals. Her expression seems to dare readers to judge her. The color is then picked up by her contrasting yellow and magenta eye make-up.

After seeing this spread, I found the ability to keep trudging through the grey winter. This spring we can all look forward to vibrant pops of color.

Syracuse weather determines every outfit. When the weather is snowy and miserable, I pile on the layers and pull on the fuzzy snow boots. However, when the weather is only moderately cold, I can wear fewer layers and break out the flats.

Since the sun was shining, I decided to wear flats as opposed to my usually boots. I then chose my favorite pair of jeans with decorative stitching. My jeans determined what I would wear on top because I did not want to cover the decorative pockets.

I wore a cropped button-up sweatshirt and layered a plain white camisole underneath. The sweatshirt resembles a peacoat with the double-breasted buttons and therefore is dressy enough to avoid looking as though I just rolled out of bed. I then chose to carry an oversized black purse to hold all of my essentials.

My outfit is coffee date appropriate but still just as comfortable as yoga pants and a sweatshirt. I felt ready to take on my day filled with classes and of course, coffee (or in my case, tea).

Rag Report: All about the ‘70s

It appears that spring 2011 is dedicated to the ‘70s. From runway collections to the hottest trends it’s all about the ‘70s. In the March issue of Vogue Latin America, model Siri Tollerod dons ‘70s inspired fashion. Photographer David Roemer and stylist Sarah Gore Reeves animated the eight-page editorial with spring pieces from Blumarine, Roberto Cavalli, Sonia Rykiel and many others.

Tollerod is a model that knows how to work her angles. Her expression as she looks away from the camera, in the first picture, is nothing short of stunning. Immediately, we are drawn to her strong cheekbones and piercing eyes. Everything about this image is extraordinary. Roemer perfectly captures the movement of the dress as well as highlight the spring colors. Can we just mention how amazing those light blue platform heels are? The hair works perfectly in this photo. It’s puffed up and strangled to perfection.

This photograph is adorable, yet still fashionable at the same time. The look on Tollerod’s face explains this image to a T. Roemer photographs Tollerod’s expression, which is a mix between surprised and relaxed. The patterned color is reminiscent of spring, which we are excitedly looking forward to.

The last image is the most memorable. It’s minimal, yet powerful. The neutral power suit with wide leg pants and oversized blazer is fashionably chic. The makeup and hair compliments the whole look of the photograph. Her facial expression and casual stance adds to the image.

We applaud Vogue Latin America for this amazing editorial. Photographer Roemer and model Tollerod outdid themselves with the images. Every time we glance out the snow-covered windows of Syracuse, we will be looking at this editorial to remind us of spring.

When looking for inspiration, up and coming designers are constantly pulling ideas from different time periods. Whether looking to the 1920’s flapper era or the 1970’s hippie generation, young designers learn a lot from considering the growth and development of American culture over the years. For her upcoming senior collection, Abby Kinzel, channels the World War II period pinup look.

Kinzel is in the process of creating six looks for the show. Along with her fresh source of inspiration, Kinzel is approaching her collection with the industry insight she's gained while working in the studios of Badgley Mischka and Tracy Reese. “Both of these internships were great. I worked as a technical designer helping out with fittings and making changes to the fit of garments,” she explained.

The fabric Kinzel is incorporating into her collection is a combination of brocades, tweeds, and burnout fabrics. “I wanted the collection to appear extremely cohesive so I featured a mostly black and metallic palette” Kinzel explained. She focuses on cinched waists with corsetry factoring into many of her designs. Additionally, epaulette detailing is used on the shoulders of several pieces.

When asked about the development of her collection Abby mentioned, “although it is a highly rewarding process it is hard to translate drawings to actual garments.” This can be a difficult process for many designers because translating two-dimensional drawings into actual three-dimensional garments can involve many tedious and demanding steps. Nevertheless, Kinzel's finished garments are designed carefully and constructed to a runway level standard.

Dream Job: Ideally, Kinzel would like to work in the technical design departments of an established fashion label.

“I would be more then happy to work for either company I interned for. I learned a lot while working for both Badgley Mischka and Tracy Reese and would love to go back anytime.”

Why you should look out for her: Kinzel translates her positive energy and dedication to fashion into all her designs.

“I want my work to be the best it can be. I keep working and altering a design until it looks the best it possibly can.” With her determination, creativity, and vivacity, Kinzel will be one to watch in the upcoming fashion show.

In this photo, Perry has her arms spread like an eagle allowing us to see her as she is. Her facial expression is soft yet serious, showing us she has nothing to hide. There is a sense of promiscuity in her gaze, but also a contrasting sense of innocence. She is wearing a white Pam Hogg lycra romper with chiffon sleeves and a gold headband around her waist. Her outfit offers angelic connotations, which conveys a sense of innocence.

The second photo Perry wears a strapless Oscar de la Renta dress with a swansdown skirt and Christian Louboutin water snake pumps. Her luscious wavy hair frames her soft facial features. She wears an interesting expression of confusion or uncertainty, which shows us that although Perry is full of self-confidence, she doesn’t always know the answers. Often times it’s not about what you wear but rather how you wear it. Sola Ayodej knew how to do just that. During her shift at Ellie Mia Boutique, Sola wore comfortably casual attire. Her heather grey long-sleeved shirt acts like a basic plain white tee and gives her look a classic, laid-back feel. She then wore skinny jeans tucked into her chic black leather boots, which dressed up her look.

She wore bold accessories in order to decorate her outfit. Her chunky silver earrings instantly dressed up her casual look taking it from relaxed to fashionably chic. She wore her hair tied back in order to allow the earrings to make their statement. The silver earrings also complemented her gold watch, which created a nice balance between silver and gold luster.

This magazine journalism major and forensics minor successfully created a look that balances casual attire, chic accessories, and silver and gold. She knows how to balance comfort and fashion making it easy to stay comfortable throughout any shift.

In the spring 2011 collections we saw the rebirth of color. Even though nudes and neutrals still remain to be in the fashion forefront, bold hues are making a bold statement in spring.

You don’t have to wait until weather starts warming up to add them to your fashion wardrobe. Amid the heavy layering and structural cuts, bold colors are popping up for the fall 2011 leading collections.

Get ahead of the game and start mixing colors whether it’s greens, turquoises, fuchsias, oranges or vibrant reds; there is a color for you that will guarantee stares of jealousy.

Here are some style tips for going bold:

- If you’re wary about going too bold with the colors, wear two colors of the same family. For example a light lavender and magenta.

Twilight star Kristen Stewart is featured on the cover this month’s Vogue. Eve MacSweeney delved into who Kristen Stewart truly is in her article “Coming on Strong.” The 20-year-old actress has already accomplished a lot including her role as Bella in the Twilight Saga. However, this young woman does not flaunt her successes. She has a mellow attitude and strives for nothing but the best.

In the first photo, featured in the letter from the editor, Anna Wintour states how Stewart has “made a generational link with girls all over the world.” In the photo, shot by Mario Testino, she is wearing Proenza Schouler. She sits cross-legged and is slightly hunched over making her seem approachable and open to conversation. Her facial expression is neutral and relaxed, allowing her natural beauty to shine through. It’s no wonder so many girls feel they can connect with her.

Stewart’s next photo is with Proenza Schouler’s Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez. She is wearing one of their dresses in a deep earth brown and glowing sunset orange. There is emotion in her face and she is holding her two hands together. This photo allows us to truly see Stewart and relate to her like millions of others.

In the last photo, Stewart’s hands are almost exactly like the previous photo indicating that it is her natural stance. She is dressed in a tweed bustier dress by Proenza Schouler in a bold and rebellious pattern to match her personality. Stewart is who she is and has a certain edge to her, which can clearly be seen through the way she stands and how she portrays herself.

Stewart gives off an edgy vibe and isn’t afraid to show the world. She rarely shows her smile and is often “accused of being downbeat and defensive” during her appearances in public. Nonetheless, perhaps these seemingly negative qualities are what make her so relatable. Girls and young women are able to relate to her as she shines in her role of Bella.

The spring semester is almost in full swing, but the snowy weather in Syracuse seems endless. Chances are you have already worn most of your new clothes you purchased over break, and your wardrobe is in need of a style pick-me-up. So what do you do when you look in your closet and can’t decide what to wear? Give your outfits an instant fashion face-lift with fun, bright accessories. Here, Stephanie Krivitzky, senior Advertising major, takes her outfit from ordinary to fabulous with a simple yet gorgeous scarf. The rich, vibrant colors and pattern of Krivitzky’s scarf adds that extra oomph to her classic combination of a white sweater and jeans.

Adding a fun scarf to your outfit offers an easy and affordable way to add some personal style to your overall look. Some of the prettiest scarves can be found in the most unexpected places, such as flea markets, vintage shops and street vendors. Krivitzky bought her scarf at a street market in Israel.

The Craze writer, Kate Ahrendtsen, knows how to dress to impress. For her interview, she layered on the garments and accessories to create a lasting look. Instead of going for a strict black and white ensemble, Kate chose to add a bit of color. She wore a high-waist free flowing black skirt over a pair of textured white tights, creating a chic and professional look. She incorporated color with her soft lilac top adorned with intricate beading. The bold black beads picked up the black in her shirt, helping tie them together.

She then chose to layer a neutral tan blazer overtop for a polished and professional look. Her caramel brown boots contrast with the blazer giving the outfit a relaxed feel.

As a final touch, Kate layered on bracelets and a watch and wore simple diamond earrings to complete her look. The stacked bracelets act as the perfect accessories because they pick up the glimmer from her top. Kate’s outfit is perfectly polished and sure to making a lasting impression.

This month’s issue of Madame Figaro is a real eye catcher for Diane Kruger fans and haute couture fanatics alike. Not only is Kruger featured on the cover, but she’s also in a 22-page editorial of jaw dropping garments right from spring 2011 couture week. Kruger dons Givenchy, Armani Privé, Chanel, Dior, Atelier Versace, Gaultier, Valentino and Alexis Mabille. Lucky, lucky girl!

Riccardo Tisci created a breathtaking collection for spring 2011 couture week. Japan heavily influenced the design process, and the craftsmanship in the details leaves us in awe. Kruger is stunning in Givenchy as she shows the back of the dress to the photographer. The use of space in the image is effective that even though there are grandiose fixtures all around, our eyes are drawn to the detailing of the dress.

John Galliano - need I say more? His 50s inspired haute couture collection provided drama, intensity and an elegance that is famous Dior. Kruger is nothing short of amazing in the gown. Her whole look, from her hair to makeup is flawless. The dress provides a strong sense of romanticism and sensuality to the atmosphere.

The last image of Kruger is of her wearing Valentino. Compared to previous collections, his spring 2011 haute couture collection stuck to the basic simples. Nudes, pastels, ruffles and butterflies were prominent in the collection. Kruger looks chic, sophisticated and the epitome of grace in this image. The photographer’s decision to capture Kruger in a close-up highlighted her features as well as the dress.

Everything works well together. The nude color gown compliments Kruger’s skin tone rather than washes her out. This photo is effortless.

Kruger shines through in each couture ensemble she wears in this editorial. All the looks work for her as her confidence and natural sexiness is displayed in each photo.

Springtime and flowers are like peanut butter and jelly; they go hand-in-hand. It’s only natural that spring designer collections are filled with floral delights. Elle’s February issue features a 10-page spread with model Devon Akoi in 2011 blooming designs from the likes of Michael Kors, Marc Jacobs, and Vera Wang.

Marc Jacobs updates wintry leather with a lighter hue and a flower design on this silk gauze dress. The bottom of the dress falls like flower petals and the red neck piece is like a wildflower emerging after the cold of winter.

While this silk crepe Tommy Hilfiger dress is a solid color, the shade of yellow is so like that of spring daffodils that the image of a flower comes to mind. The crepe material is also delicate like the daffodils that bloom in springtime.

The New York Botanical Garden is a perfect backdrop for this spread. The conifers mirror the embroidery on this Oscar de la Renta gown, a print refreshingly different from normal floral patterns. The poured-glass flower brooches from Mark Walsh Leslie Chin serve as a beautiful embellishment that enhances, rather than clashes, with this dress.

This floral spread comes at a perfect time. When most are still suffering from winter blues, the colorful blossoms and patterns shown here make the world look a little brighter and springtime look a little more within reach.
