Fashionese

When people think of fashion, it’s usually images, not words that come to mind. The words the industry uses to describe what we’re seeing has created a whole new language: Fashionese. There could be a 50 pound book written about all of the terms and lingo reserved for different types of materials and styles. Here are just a few Fashionese terms that show both ends of the fashion spectrum.

Couture Line:

This term refers to the tradition of custom-made, one of a kind pieces made in France. Couture pieces are often more expensive that run-of-the-mill designer pieces and ordinarily look more artistic than practical. These pieces are made of the highest quality materials, beading and stitching as well. Couture is often attached to bridal gowns that can be custom made with the bride’s specific requests in mind.

Diffusion Line:

This is pretty much a major designer’s attempt to diffuse their clothing line to the general public at a lower price. Target and Kohl’s host a lot of these types of clothing lines. Some examples are: Marc by Marc Jacobs, See by Chloe and Simply Vera by Vera Wang.

Chloe is one of my favorite lines...which is why I hate the fact that See by Chloe is not much less than the couture line! The Vera Wang line in Khol's is one of the best lower priced lines I've seen so far.
