Fierce+Foreign: Does your scarf hang low?

Fierce+Foreign draws on the fashion experiences of SU students studying abroad.

'Tis the season to get all wrapped up.

The frosty weather beckons the extra-long, chunky, cable-knit scarf. But save it for very low temperatures, because this bulk of wool is one hefty garment to hand-carry should the sun decide to switch on the heat.

Sarah Lee, a junior at Strasbourg, is warm and snug in a crimson chunky scarf from Zara, an unconventional but cozy match to her brown leather bomber jacket.

I went ahead and purchased my own, and on one occasion dragged the end of it on the ground as I rode my bike...a bit like Hanne Gaby Odiele here for the Missoni Fall/Winter 2009 collection.

This month's issue of French Glamour featured the Missoni collection of sashaying drapery in neutrals. The loose fluidity and dusty colors draw to mind a Saharan camel herder.  

I've spotted French mademoiselles on the streets of Strasbourg snuggled up in these gargantuan scarves in sharp colors to complement their black pea coats. 

Try to avoid black on black because this fluid look can get somewhat eerie with excessive black fabric floppin' about. Save the black for skin-tight garments. Pick your colors with discretion, because trust me, the scarf is a sizable splash of color. If in doubt, you won't go wrong with a dusty, demure palette.
