Cuse Closet: Dressers Block

Cuse Closet peeks inside the staff's wardrobes to find out where we're going and how good we look getting there.

I’m sure you, darling readers, are much more decisive in your dressing that I could ever hope to be. There are many mornings when I find myself standing in a heap of clothes (also invariably cursing) with no idea what to wear. It’s not that I don’t try to plan ahead. Often times before crashing (at around 2:30 AM if I’m lucky), I’ll leave a couple things that seem like they’d work together in a pile on my floor. Unfortunately, in the words of Ida Maria “What’s easy in the night is always such a bite in the morning light (oh ho ho hooo).”

Tuesday, I set out a pink and gold button down and denim shirt dress that I thought would make a lovely mélange of utilitarian worker and femme, but come Wednesday morning, I found myself wanting to wear something more streamlined and put together (the antithesis of how I felt at the time). After going through to many outfit changes and briefly wishing I could reference another Ida Maria song (“I like you so much better when you’re naked”) I settled on this mostly black-ensemble, threw on my also black raincoat, and was finally out the door.

Biz Buzz: Dos and Don'ts of professional dressing

Biz Buzz keeps its fabulously accessorized ear to the ground to provide breaking fashion news coverage.

I’m looking through my closet for an interview I have with a PR firm tomorrow, and I have no idea what to wear. I don't want to be too formal, and I don't want to worry about being too trendy.

Thankfully, the Career Services Network at SU, Macy’s, Clinique and other vendors are hosting Dress For Success, an event aimed at teaching us to dress affordably for interviews, career fairs and professional settings.

Activities will include games, prizes, music and a show exhibiting fashions that are considered dos and don’ts in the work world. Jennifer Pluta, internship coordinator for the Career Services Network, suggests women avoid exposing cleavage and wearing high-waisted skirts. When it comes to makeup and pantyhose, she says stick to neutrals. Guys with facial hair should trim and under no circumstance should a guy wear white socks.

The event will take place tomorrow at 7:30pm in the Gifford Auditorium at SU.  Tickets can be purchased in the Schine Box Office for  $3 and $5.

Biz Buzz: Dress For Success hits campus

Biz Buzz keeps its fabulously accessorized ear to the ground to provide breaking fashion news coverage.

We’ve all noticed that girl at a student career conference before. She’s the one sporting those white and black shoe-boots, skin-tight leathery pants, a tank, a leather jacket and even purple eye shadow with a hint of sparkle.

Yes, that girl. She is absolutely fearless.

However, to her misfortune, she is not fierce. Many students go out of their way to make themselves memorable during these types of events, yet many fail when they try too hard.

It's a good thing the Career Services Network at SU, Macy’s, Clinique and other vendors are hosting Dress For Success, an event to teach students how to dress affordably for interviews, career fairs and professional settings.

"Students get mixed messages about what is trendy versus what is interview-appropriate. We wanted to assist them with navigating their professional style," says Jennifer Pluta, internship coordinator for the Career Services Network.

"When you wear something, you are marketing yourself. Even if you have a great stellar resume, it will not matter if you are inappropriately dressed. You have to know what quality looks like and not depend on the price tag."

Pluta advises females to stay away from high-waist skirts and exposing any cleavage. Although trendy, they are often times too much for an interview.  Makeup should be neutral and pantyhose should be worn unless there is a run.

For guys, she advises against white socks and unkempt facial hair. Sleek and low-cuts are always a plus.

The event takes place Dec. 8 at 7pm in the Grant Auditorium in the College of Law. Festivities will include games, prizes, music and a show exhibiting fashions that are considered dos and don’ts in the work world. Tickets are available for $3 and $5 at Schine Box Office.

The Craze: Learn to knit (or just buy one)

The Craze is a trend report bringing you the latest (and, duh, the greatest) in beauty and style.

With winter fast approaching, there is one thing on our mind: figuring out how to stay warm on the way to class while still managing to look good.

It would be easy to roll out of bed and rock your grey ‘Cuse sweatshirt every day, but let’s be honest — some of us want glances from the cuties we’re going to class for in the first place.

Luckily, we have a great variety of alternatives to bulky sweatshirts or the ever-trusty Northface fleece. You can find knits in the form of wraps, pullovers, dresses, and cardigans in nearly every price range.

Pink Rose Turtleneck Sweater Dress from Macy’s $28.50

byCORPUS Popcorn Sweater from Urban Outfitters $68

Tip: The pockets are perfect for keeping your cell nearby and your hands warm.

The great thing about these knits is that they can also be dressed up or down. For a simpler look, add some leggings and a basic long-sleeved tee or thermal. To turn it up a level, belt it to get a more defined shape or pair it with some flashy accessories, such as shiny bangles or metallic leggings.

Shaker Stitch Cowl-Neck Sweater from Express $39.50

So, friends, don’t fall into the sweatshirt pattern this winter season. Invest in some lush knits and heads will surely turn.
