Biz Buzz: Weekly Round-Up

Biz Buzz keeps its fabulously accessorized ear to the ground to provide breaking fashion news coverage.

Milan Fashion Week has just come to an end, where lace, color blocking, and ‘60s motifs emerged as trends. Now, on to the last quarter of fashion month, Paris!

John Galliano was dismissed from Dior Tuesday after a video of the designer making anti-Semitic statements in a Paris bar went viral, according to the New York Times.

The designer released a statement Wednesday apologizing for his behavior: “Anti-Semitism and racism have no part in our society. I unreservedly apologise for my behaviour in causing any offence.”

Galliano could now face prison time, according to Fashionista.

The Academy Awards Sunday night was a fashion feast for those who live for red carpet style. Hailee Steinfeld in Marchesa, Scarlett Johansson in Dolce and Gabbana and Cate Blanchett in Givenchy made my best dressed list. Who made yours?

The Craze: Walk Your Own Red Carpet

The Craze is a trend report bringing you the latest (and, duh, the greatest) in beauty and styles.

After watching the Oscars last week, mainly for the red carpet, I got excited for spring cocktail dresses. Some of my favorite looks were from Gwyneth Paltrow, Natalie Portman, Reese Witherspoon and Scarlett Johansson. Take these looks, neutrals and magentas, belts and bands, and pick out some rocking cocktail dresses for spring.

Below are some of my favorite cocktail wear for this season from BHLDN, Anthropologie’s new bridal shop. I know, a “bridal shop” isn’t exactly where you go looking for cocktail dresses, but BHLDN has some great looks that are sure to getting people talking at the party. Yes, they are a bit pricey, but are worth it, right?

Fierce+Foreign: A look that says, "Meow"

Fierce+Foreign draws on the fashion experiences of SU students studying abroad.

Tease the lion with a bit of flirtation.

Underneath your layers this winter, show a little peek of animal print, just enough to lure your prey. The jungle is teeming with patterns, but the classics are still the best catch. Leopard print, in small quantities, is the perfect pattern this season to match a dark solid color outfit.

The key word here: small. Leopard print isn't for everybody; wear it right and you'll be a sexy kitten. Wear it wrong, and you'll be one of Josie's Pussycats.

Learn from Scarlett Johansson, who's right on the bull's eye on how to wear leopard print in Mango's ad this season.

Wear the print as a form-fitting top, and match with a black blazer. Avoid wearing anything too revealing in leopard skin to avoid stepping over the line into trashy. Isabel Marant has a sleek example of this combo in her Fall/Winter collection.

But of course, leopard print isn't everybody's cup of tea. It's quite a daring, eye-catching pattern. If it's the first time you're thinking of trying animal print, then you can wear it as a scarf like Amy Jacobson, a junior at SU Strasbourg.

Her little dash of leopard print is modestly flirtatious with the black and white. It's just enough to tease and leaves the rest to imagination.
