When asked about his inspirations for his Fall 2008 ready-to-wear collection, Marc Jacobs told reporters that he wasn't very inspired. It showed. Now, I'm not one to be unsympathetic to creative license, and Jacobs is known for making up his own rules when it comes to fashion, but there was absolutely nothing in his fall collection that I would purchase, even if I were an Olsen twin rolling around in dough. Jacobs' usual playful-chic designs were replaced with drab and boxy garments- some in pastel colors perfectly suited for a nursing home setting, in my opinion. While some of the coats and pants looked like they came straight out of my grandparents' closets, other random items like dog collar inspired belts and armor-like cuffs make it hard to sum up the collection with any cohesive description. Above are some "highlights" from the collection: intense shoulder volume, alien-like headbands, and shapeless velvet pants to name a few. To give him some credit, he did get his show out on the catwalk relatively on time this year (unlike his two-hour delayed debut for fall 2007). He may have disappointed me this season, but Marc will always have a place in my heart- as long as he stops designing bathrobes for the 70+ demographic.
