Paths to be Discovered
The fashion career is a rigorous, competitive, and demanding one. If you're not out to be the next Alexander McQueen, Roberto Cavalli, or Narciso Rodriguez, there are many more vibrant jobs in the fashion industry. Here in this article, Ysolt Usigan wrote,
"Many people aspire to a career in the fashion industry. But with so many individuals vying for jobs in an industry with a limited number of opportunities, success may come from exploring careers beyond the runway."
This statement seems obvious, but not a lot of students interested in fashion consider other possibilities off the bat. When they think of studying fashion, they immediately aspire to be the next Donatella Versace! Optimism is a favorable characteristic to bear, but it may not always be the most realistic one. Also, people don't know what they want until they have put other options to the test. Someone focusing on fashion design, might not walk down that path in the future. Usigan spoke of a student following her career aspirations,
"Erin Stafford, a Los Angeles stylist and image consultant, got her start in Hollywood. But it was her degree in political science and international communications from the American University of Paris in France that gave her the skills to succeed. "
Just because a student majors in fashion design doesn't mean that they will end up doing just that. Being led into a different direction could be even more exciting and fulfilling.
