Fierce+Foreign draws on the fashion experiences of SU students studying abroad.
My French film professor showed the class one of her favorite films L'ours et la poupee or The Bear and the Doll (1969) starring Brigitte Bardot.
Brigitte Bardot
In the movie, she had a great poofy coiffure and, even then, she was already sporting knee-high boots. I didn't know much about Bardot except that she's a French big-breasted blonde bombshell who captured the fantasies of a generation of boys and men. She's a superstar of a bygone era who's sultry visage is now stunningly distorted by heavy plastic surgery.
Once known for garnering a reputation for French women as sexy, she serves better now as an example of what it is to not age gracefully. Nevertheless, she broke a lot of ground in her day by being the first actress to wear a bikini in a movie.
She's also often referred to as a real-life Barbie doll because of her 20 inch waist. She continued her track record of breaking ground by also posing nude for Playboy to celebrate her 40th birthday. Bardot's songs are also equally as sexy as her style. A playful, seductive song that she sang, Moi je joue or Me I Play is used in the Miss Dior Cherie commercial, beautifully directed by Sofia Coppola.
In Bardot's heyday, she made famous a style of sweaters with a folded off-shoulder collar, now called the 'Bardot neckline.' The neckline is not revealing and leaves plenty to the imagination.

An example of a 'Bardot neckline' dress from Clockhouse. And of course, to pull off the 'Bardot neckline', you have to coif your hair into a pompadour like Brigitte Bardot's too. She turned 75 this past September, and a special exhibition was put together in Paris called "Brigitte Bardot: The Carefree Years", which chronicles her fierce style and character that helped liberated the stuffy French society back in the day.
