The Orange Carpet: Rock-Star Style

The Orange Carpet scours SU to roll out the best campus style (die, hoodies, die!)

Sophomore public relations major, Bianca Mashal, wore her rock star leggings as she waited in line for fashion PR guru, Kelly Cutrone on April 11. Her burnout shirt and jean jacket complemented her rock and roll look. Mashal’s leggings prove that the grab and go appeal of leggings, doesn’t mean they need to be boring. Buying a pair with a little embellishment, like her studded leggings, add style without going over the top. Celebrities like Beyoncé, rock this comfortable and edgy trend. Cutrone even complemented Mashal after the book signing!

Favorite trend: Anything comfortable and edgy

Least favorite trend: Wide leg pants

Jean jacket: LF stores

Top: Urban Outfitters

Leggings: Tart

Shoes: Converse

The Orange Carpet: Chic and Sleek Cargos

The Orange Carpet scours SU to roll out the best of campus style (die, hoodies, die!).

The military trend is still strong as we move through fall. The Orange Carpet spotted Marcy Franklin, a Journalism Graduate Student on campus in a pair of fashionable skinny cargo pants. While these pants are military inspired, they are a far cry from the baggy fatigues sported by members of the armed services. Instead, Franklin’s cargos are sleek and provide a sleek silhouette. To keep her look simple, Franklin pairs her cargos with a simple fitted tee and warm cardigan. Franklin’s cargos are very versatile, and can be dressed up or dressed down.

Here, she pairs her cargos with boots, but they would also look great with heels or a pair of flats. Whether rocking her cargos to class, or a night out on the town, Franklin’s military inspired look is very stylish!

It’s no surprise Franklin’s favorite trend of the moment is the military look. She is also ready to explore with some animal print, and plans on adding leopard pieces to her wardrobe soon. She describes her style as a mix of classic and eclectic pieces, but with a comfortable spin.

What do you think? Have you rocked a pair of this season’s sleek cargos yet?

Franklin is wearing:

Cargo Pants: Old Navy

T-shirt: Forever 21

Cardigan: The Limited

Boots: Frye

Copy Franklin’s style with these cargo pant options:

Old Navy: $34.50

Piperlime: $78.00

Joe’s Jeans at Nordstrom: $167.00

The Craze: More Fashionable Than Superman

The Craze is a trend report bringing you the latest (and, duh, the greatest) in beauty and style.

Is it too cold for a hoodie? Do your arms feel stiff in your nice wool coat all of the time? Then try one of this fall’s latest trends: the cape. Don’t worry. You won’t look like a superhero or a vampire.

Urban Outfitters

Rage & Bone, Vena Cava, and United Bamboo, to name a few, showcased this new cover-up on their Fall 2010 runways earlier this year. Even Gossip Girl’s Blair Waldorf wore a shorter cape, known as a capelet, this season.

Capes come in a variety of styles, just like most outerwear. They have the coverage of a coat, but the freedom of a vest. Adding a cape to your outfit instantly dresses things up, so you remain polished without looking as if you tried too hard. Wear them over your blouse and jeans while heading to class or match it with some business attire for your upcoming interviews.

Nordstrom

From high-end retailers to your local mall, capes are bound to be in stock. So chose your style and your price range. The cape trend is for everyone this season.

The Craze: Making the marshmallow look good

The Craze is a trend report bringing you the latest (and, duh, the greatest) in beauty and style.

A puffer look from Marios Schwab

What’s winter, especially in frosty Syracuse, without the legendary puffer? These bad boys have been around for ages, but haven’t always been so fashion-friendly (Remember looking like the Michelin man growing up?). Well, lucky for us, there are some styles out there this season that will you keep you warm and stylish — the ultimate winter combination.

The key to unlocking this trend is making sure there's some sort of visible silhouette. A lot of winter jackets tend to hide your figure instead of enhancing or flattering them, so be sure to choose a coat that has some killer tailoring and a clear, feminine shape, like coats from from G-Star Raw, Marc by Marc Jacobs and Kenneth Cole.

Go for a define waist, like this Marc Jacobs puffer coat

If long length isn’t your thing, go for something shorter, but with equal attention to detail, like the Thaly Jacket by Soia & Kyo, or something edgier, like Helmut Lang’s down coat.
Helmut Lang's cropped down coat

Just because you may be braving the snow in this piece doesn’t mean you can’t look chic at the same time! Go for a coat with detail — high collars, flattering cuts and unique stitching all make serious fashion statements.

Last, but certainly not least, don’t be afraid of color! Don’t get caught up in the drab colors of winter; try new hues, like this RainForest Pillow Collar Jacket, which you can purchase at Nordstrom.

Give your puffer a pop of color

Colors like taupe, burgundy and crème all look great in the winter time. You don’t have to stick to plain black if you want to go the extra mile to style!
