latex is the new cotton

I just want to point out a trend I find totally bizarre but still kinda cool: latex leggings.

I realize that fashion is not just about beauty and function; it's also about creativity and experimentation. I think it's important for designers to push boundaries and take on unorthodox fabrics and materials.

But when I first saw these leggings--I almost gagged. Shiny stretchy leggings!? Do they squeak when you walk? Does your skin get any oxygen? I thought civilization had rejected spandex--awhile ago. Why would anyone want to wear latex pants?!?

To be honest, my feelings about the idea of latex leggings haven't changed much. I still don't want to wear black rubber pants. I mean, Bruce Wayne wears black rubber pants--you know!? And since I don't moonlight as a super hero--I don't think they would work for me. However, when I actually see them on other people (not me or Batman)--I think they look totally rock star rad. I am not at all sold on the comfort factor, but at least on Heidi Klum and Rihanna--they work. Admittedly, partly because Heidi and Rihanna have the world's most perfect legs so the form adhering fabric works on them. But they also pair well with a variety of over-sized tops Ashley Olsen has actually relaxed the look of hers with a baggy grey sweatshirt--like it's totally normal to wear latex pants while grocery shopping. Heidi Klum has paired hers with a huge soft coat and sequined top which actually makes the shine of her pants look pearly and sophisticated. And the baggy fit around the ankles is a pleasantly surprising shape for latex as you would expect it to just fit you like a band aid no matter what. And of course Rihanna has given hers an edgier more metal look that goes great with thee leather jacket and boots.
