Chunky sweaters and cable knits are so popular this season even as socks. Ditch your snow boots for a day and pull on a chunky pair of tall knit socks with your favorite pair of boots. Pull them up with over the knee boots, or scrunch them down with sneakers and short boots. These socks incorporate the sweater trend in an unexpected place, and they’re warm! Freshman Advertising major, Christy Walshe, looked comfy and trendy on a frigid Syracuse day with her knit socks, chunky sweater scarf and headband. This trend is cheap but practical investment and can be used every winter!

Keitz, a sophomore broadcast journalism major, wears a tailored vest to add an extra layer of both warmth and excitement to her outfit. Keitz also brightens up her outfit with a gorgeous floral print scarf.

A tailored vest is a timeless, classic piece that can be worn with jeans, dress pants, or a pencil skirt. A vest is a super versatile piece that won’t be going out of style anytime soon.

The spring semester is almost in full swing, but the snowy weather in Syracuse seems endless. Chances are you have already worn most of your new clothes you purchased over break, and your wardrobe is in need of a style pick-me-up. So what do you do when you look in your closet and can’t decide what to wear? Give your outfits an instant fashion face-lift with fun, bright accessories. Here, Stephanie Krivitzky, senior Advertising major, takes her outfit from ordinary to fabulous with a simple yet gorgeous scarf. The rich, vibrant colors and pattern of Krivitzky’s scarf adds that extra oomph to her classic combination of a white sweater and jeans.

Adding a fun scarf to your outfit offers an easy and affordable way to add some personal style to your overall look. Some of the prettiest scarves can be found in the most unexpected places, such as flea markets, vintage shops and street vendors. Krivitzky bought her scarf at a street market in Israel.

The Craze: Wedge On Into Spring

Cuse Closet: Getting Better all the Time!

Last Thursday I got sick. It wasn’t too surprising, after working through too many long nights and watching everyone around me fall victim to the sinus plague, but this year I wanted to be prepared. As soon as I felt that tell-tale tickle in the back of my throat, I headed to CVS to restock my supply of cold season staples- Tylenol Day Time, Mucinex, and Halls cough drops. After popping all these cold medicines, I felt like a zombie (or perhaps a meth-head) and I don’t think they really aided in my recovery. What did help, though, was rest and the best cure of all—fashion.

When I'm feeling rundown, sick, or slogging my way through day two of an all-nighter, one of the things that always makes me feel better (along with drinking as many cups of vanilla roast as possible) is to take a few extra minutes getting ready in the morning and picking out something I really love. Usually during these groggy moments I reach for the most classic clothing in my closet however I never want to feel as done as a post-makeover contestant on TLC’s What Not to Wear (pre-makeover contestant goes without saying). I try to strike the balance between power dressing and personal dressing by combining my staples with patterned and colored pieces as much as possible, to give me a little more moxie. While layering my most tasteful trench and a wool sweater dress over a floral frock from last season, I was well on the path to a speedy recovery.

From her necklace down to her boots, every part of Kylie Haymaker’s outfit is a fall fashion DO! Haymaker, a sophomore Communication and Rhetorical studies major, was spotted on campus wearing this awesome outfit. Haymaker’s fashion forward boyfriend blazer stands out from the SU crowd. The slight texture in the pattern of the blazer is much more exciting than the basic black or grey (although we do still love our basic blazers!). Haymaker keeps the rest of her outfit simple with her black leggings and white tee. The balance of the outfit allows Haymaker’s fabulous necklace stand out.

With the combo of little boutiques and vintage shops in Armory Square and the increasing popularity of the vintage look it’s not surprising that we are seeing an array of layering, oversized clothing and 19^th century booties.

 

Sophomore Bess Morin

Sophomore Fashion Design major, Bess Morin, could be the poster child for this updated vintage look. Sporting distressed black tights, an oversized wool sweater and layered tanks, Morin says her style is defined by these wardrobe staples. Also eye catching are her Southwestern-styled necklaces and her metal clad fingers decked out in rings of all shapes and sizes. However, the massive amount of silver jewelry does not overpower her outfit. It simply adds to her personal style.

“I find that buying clothes from vintages stores and second-hand shops like Salvation Army is not only an inexpensive shopping alternative, but you can also find more unique items than you can’t find at a brand name store,” explains Morin while fidgeting with her many rings. Vintage pieces are easy to mix and match because they are distinct, but not overwhelming.
 

A pair of 19^th century inspired tan, leather lace-ups was one of the most unique items Morin was sporting. Morin had been eyeing these booties, from Modern Pop Culture, for weeks before receiving them as a gift from friends. Booties are a nice alternative for those warmer days - warmer cold days we should say - when calf-length or knee-high boots are not weather appropriate. For those who want the some added height, there are even heeled lace ups hitting stores, like these boots from Steve Madden.

Jump on your Harleys, Syracuse, because there’s no better time than now to release your inner biker chick. 

Buckles, studs and chains are adorning everything from shoes to jeans to leather jackets this fall, and we aren’t talking in minimal amounts. This season these metal-clad details are pushing edgy over the edge.

Forget about dripping in diamonds; chains are hanging from apparel and accessories in head to toe fashion. Ankle boots, which have been carried through from the past few fall seasons, are no longer plain and black. 

Now decked out with some heavy metal, your boots will make some serious noise while strutting down the street.

However, keep in mind that heavily detailed pieces are super edgy and unless you want to rock an extremely hardcore biker look (or look like you belong to a gang), limit the hardware to one or two pieces in your overall outfit.

It's officially spring, almost time to pack away the snow boots- even here in central New York.
