The Orange Carpet: Wear Warm Weather Fashion in Winter

The Orange Carpet scours SU to roll out the best of campus style (die, hoodies, die!)

Favorite Trend: Johnson describes her style as “street chic". She embraces the already worn look. Johnson is also a fan of translucent and see-through pieces.

Trend the “Needs to Die”: Uggs! Real or fake, they all need to go away.

The Orange Carpet spotted Krista Johnson leaving her Fashion Advertising class in Newhouse. This stylish sophomore is a public relations major. Johnson’s outfit offers a solution to a common winter weather conundrum, how to wear a warmer weather piece, such as a short dress, in the depths of winter. Johnson paired her dress with a knitted sweater, tights and winter weather boots. Paired with the right accessories, Johnson’s dress looks just as fabulous in February as it will in July.

How do you make your favorite spring and summer pieces appropriate for winter?

Johnson is wearing:

Tights: Forever 21

Boots: Boutique in Minnesota

Sweater: Urban Outfitters

Dress: Target

Necklaces, Bracelets & Earrings: Forever 21, a boutique in NYC & vintage

Cuse Closet: Boyish Charm

Cuse Closet
peeks inside the staff's wardrobes to find out where we're going and how good we look getting there.

When I woke up and saw a blanket of snow covering every inch of the ground, my motivation to get out of bed dropped. I instantly knew I needed a comfortable and cozy outfit to mimic my mood. That’s why I chose to wear a flannel. It wasn’t just any flannel however; it was a guy’s flannel. Women have been stealing different articles of clothing from men for quite some time (boyfriend jeans anyone?). When my brother decided he didn’t want his flannel anymore, I took it without hesitation. The colors are vibrant but do not look out of place during the winter season.

Since it is a guy’s flannel, I needed to wear a belt to give it shape. I chose a wide black belt to pick up on the black in the flannel. Not only did this create an instant hourglass figure, but also added a feminine touch. To contrast with the black, I wore a white cami that peeked out. Since the flannel is free flowing, I chose to wear black leggings for a sleek look. As for my accessories, I rolled up the sleeves and wore a chunky bangle along with my watch. After pulling on my warm and fuzzy snow boots, I walked out the door and into what felt like a snow globe.

Cuse Closet: Balancing the Basics

Cuse Closet peeks inside the staff's wardrobes to find out where we're going and how good we look getting there.

Today I was able to take one of my chunky sweaters out of the closet and into the welcoming autumn air. Since it’s still bearable out, I opted for a sweater with ¾ length sleeves and an off-the-shoulder neckline. Underneath, I wore a lacy white tank that peeked out of the bottom of the sweater to add a feminine feel to my outfit (plus, lace is in according to Cosmo). I paired this with dark blue jeggings in order to balance out the non-formfitting sweater. Instead of flats, I decided to wear Uggs to ensure my feet would stay warm. To complete my look, I draped a long pendant necklace around my neck and added a bold silver bangle on my wrist and was ready for a full day of classes.

Cuse Closet: Get pirate boots, matey

Cuse Closet peeks inside the staff's wardrobes to find out where we're going and how good we look getting there.

It’s a tough life for boots this time of year, but even tougher for those of us who get tired of wearing them. To help this winter fashion rut, try switching out the cozy Uggs for a pair of “pirate” boots.

The material is much more durable than suede, and the boots look fashionable while still keeping your feet warm. Today, I decided to wear my pirate boots with a pair of dark green skinny jeans. I liked how the slouchy style of the boots complemented the tightness of the jeans. I stayed with the dark palette of colors and chose a basic black dress. The dress is loose-fitting but still gives shape, making it look more like a tunic with the jeans.

Not wanting to wear too much black, I paired the dress with a purple and blue cropped blazer. The collar and the sleeves of the blazer continue the layered look. The blazer’s color also allowed me to wear earrings that were light, which added a nice contrast to the otherwise dark outfit.

Cuse Closet: So long, sweet summer

Cuse Closet peeks inside the staff's wardrobes to find out where we're going and how good we look getting there.

Today's closet: Lydia Shahmoon

Lydia Shahmoon winterizing the best of summer's looks.

Considering yesterday was just about the last day of snowless streets, I decided to pay homage to the summer.

Lately I’ve been pretty inspired by the Summer of Love, so I tried out my new paisley button-down to channel my inner hippie. I paired it with navy shorts to offset the light colors and make it more season-appropriate.

Shying away from Uggs and other cozy footwear, I whipped out my favorite beige Mary Janes for the last run of the season. Since wearing shorts sans tights was not an option, I threw on my trusty wool tights for some warmth.

I put on the belt to add to the laid-back feel of the outfit. I didn’t want to overwhelm the outfit with too much jewelry, so I stuck to a few basics: my mother’s gold chain necklace, my favorite cable-wire bracelets (that I found at a street sale this summer), a $3 forever21 ring, and a custom-made amethyst ring.

The Craze: Have a boyfriend? Then steal his jeans

The Craze is a trend report bringing you the latest (and, duh, the greatest) in beauty and style.

We were drawn to this article on College Fashion all about different denim looks, as we're firm believers in the art of being comfortable and looking good.

Our favorite was the newly popular boyfriend jean. It's an easy look to pull off, and you need it in your closet, like, yesterday.

The boyfriend jean styled by College Fashion.

How we'd style it: Instead of wearing flats with the boyfriend jean you can make a substitute with those clutch pair of Uggs you’ve got laying around. Since it’s getting a tad chilly out, but the weather is mild enough, it’s still possible to pull this look off for a little while longer. We would personally change the black tank to a long-sleeve shirt because, hello, we’re in Syracuse.

This college essential is practically all basics, which makes it even easier to put together. And thanks to Forever 21 and Target, basics are so easy to find these days. Also, the colors of these items are totally interchangeable.

If it’s chillier than sweater weather, grab a navy trench to cover the look gracefully...and don’t forget that trusty umbrella you have on call by the front door (just some friendly Syracuse advice).

Uggs 2.0

Love them or hate them, Uggs aren't going anywhere.  Thankfully the Australian company has released some polished-looking alternatives to the original suede boot.
The Brooks Tall fits like the original but with a cleaner silhouette, sturdier leather, and better traction.

The Broome captures that perfect rugged equestrian feel without sacrificing the wooly sheepskin lining.

At the very least, both of these boots deserve a nod for practicality: the leather will stand up to rain, snow, and salt much better than their suede counterparts.
