Super heroes aren’t the only ones who can rock the cape trend. This super hero inspired trend is a chic alternative to winter coats. Cape’s are also the perfect transition piece from winter to spring. The cape trend re-works the indie poncho look and refines it into a chic winter jacket option.

The Orange Carpet spotted Lauren Taylor looking cozy and chic in her black cape and fur embellished high knee boots. This simple outfit is taken to another level with Taylor’s alternative to a pea coat. The best part is that this expensive looking cape if from H&M. Her jersey cape will be a great alternative to a cardigan in spring. It is also a great layering piece with long sleeves or a chunky scarf.

Rag Report: O-M-GLEE!

Rag Report dives under the covers of fashion publications to rant or rave about all the glossy goodness.

Lea Michele and Cory Monteith take the cover of this month’s Teen Vogue their undeniable chemistry. Photographer Regan Cameron and stylist Lauren Waterman captured these two Glee stars on the beaches of sunny California. The theme of this photo shoot was youthful and fun loving—Michele and Monteith were able to do just that and more!

The first picture has Michele looking straight into the camera, she has a serious expression on her face and she is holding onto her partner, Monteith. Michele’s eye makeup is dark and edgy, just like her hair. The rest of Michele’s face is soft and clean cut and she has somewhat of an angelic glow with the background shining in on her. Monteith is facing down so the camera cannot see his face. But, he is holding onto Michele’s and has a small smirk on his face; he is the gentle figure within the photo. Wearing a cable knit sweater, Monteith looks like he is ready to relax.

A brighter and young at heart photo is placed in the spread next. Monteith is holding Michele up and giving a funny facial expression to the camera. He seems relaxed and looks like this photo was candid. He is wearing an American Apparel red cardigan and white tee shirt. Michele is holding onto Monteith and is staring off to her right side. She is wearing a unique bathing suit-esque outfit. The top and the skirt are not attached so a little bit of skin is showing but the skirt is layered and wavy. This outfit creates a fun loving image and brings out the brown in both Michele’s hair and eyes.

The final photo, shows Michele and Monteith huddled together drinking slushies (how ironic). Monteith is wearing a white American Apparel tee shirt and is staring straight at the camera. Michele is wearing coach sunglasses and smiling to the left of then camera. The body language on this photo is close contact and friendly. These actors are able to be close to one another, which sounds the comfortable atmosphere they have around one another.

At the end of the photo shoot both Michele and Monteith agreed that they had a good time. Nothing beats jumping and running through the beach with your best friend and for both Lea and Cory that’s one another. The compatibility that they have on camera shows signs of true friendship off camera. This wonderful pair came together for a wonderful and exciting photo shoot.

All my life, I’ve been a self-professed Sound of Music fanatic. This obsession was supported by the codependency of my friends who’d happily pass the hours with me, singing the soundtrack in sequence from start to finish, complete with harmony parts (we were choir kids ‘nuff said…). And in fourth grade I jumped at the chance to be Maria, singing the film’s title track for an afterschool Broadway Revue production.

Earlier this week, as the prefinals projects were mounting I found myself wanting to listen to the movie soundtrack again. I am still leery of downloading whole albums onto my computer so I settled on listening to it on YouTube. Maria’s naïve confident voice perked me up and I was shocked by how close in age I am now to the character.

Today’s outfit was a subtle testament to the film. A striped blue tunic that I layered under a gathered jersey knit dress had a folky feel similar to what the young nun wore while traipsing around the Austrian Alps. Even while on the run from German Officers, Maria never encountered snow, I was not so lucky so for However for practicality’s sake I layered on an oversized grey cardigan over my Maria dress combo and to keep the whole thing from getting to twee, I finished off the look with a pair of black lace-up boots.

A sunny fall day brought out the most fashionable outfits Syracuse has to offer. The Orange Carpet caught up with Victoria Troxler, a sophomore Magazine major. Troxler was spotted wearing the classic combination of leggings, a loose fitted shirt and tall boots. But what really helps Troxler’s outfit stand out was her on-trend denim vest. Denim is popping up everywhere this fall besides your basic pair of jeans. Troxler’s outfit demonstrates that wearing denim in unexpected items such as vests, or shirts really helps an outfit stand out.

Besides the fact that denim in unexpected places is a fashion DO, Troxler’s stylish outfit helps us see the value of recycling your own clothing. Embracing the current trends and being stylish on a college student’s budget can be challenging. A foolproof way to stretch your shopping dollars is to take a look at what is already in your wardrobe. Here, Troxler revamped an old denim jacket and turned it into the eye-catching vest she is wearing today. Get inspired by Troxler’s outfit and take a look at what you already own. Have any old jackets you could turn into a vest? An old pair of jeans to crop into shorts?

Troxler’s favorite trend of the moment are fur vests, She describes her style as easy but edgy.

Lydia's dreaming of spring

In honor of the warmer weather, I decided to throw on a spring-y pastel purple dress. When I say “warmer”, I mean 35 degrees Fahrenheit, which is still pretty cold if you’re not from these northern parts, so I put some wool tights in the mix. 

To jazz it up (…yes, I did just say “jazz it up”…), I put on my most obnoxious of scarves: a monogrammed Fendi scarf. Monograms have a serious tendency to look tacky and showy, but I think that if you tone it down with a simple outfit, the tackiness can translate to being somewhat stylish and ironic. I finished it off by adding a simple silver necklace and loose white button-down that wouldn’t distract from or clash with my gaudy scarf.

The Craze: Coo coo for cutouts

Have you ever tried to revamp your classic Hanes beater by taking a pair of scissors, cutting aimlessly, only to find that it looked like you did exactly that? 

Well, for the DIY-challenged, this is your lucky season.

Cutouts have been popping up everywhere from the runways to the celebrities to your local mall. This trend is great because it can be applied to anything from t-shirts to bathing suits.

Cutouts can turn looks from plain to sexy while still leaving much to the imagination. To jazz up your plain old jeans, throw on this Truly Madly Deeply top and look effortless:

The cold air is starting to fill our lungs and fuel my love for fashion. Fall and winter are my favorite seasons for dressing. While we’ve seen a lot of features on how women work fashion on campus, I believe that men can work it too.

On gloomy days, my favorite pointed-toe shoes are my mood uplift. They’re very comfortable. If I could wear them everyday, I would, but it would be unfair to my other shoes. I think every man on campus should get a pair of nice shoes, something more than just for casual walking.  

As a lover of the skinny jean, I think these shoes are the skinny’s best friend. The pants I chose today have a slight pattern to them, which gives them more personality than a pair of boring gray pants. The shoes and the pants together are a match made in fashion heaven.

For me, the best kind of shirt to match with any outfit is a classic v-neck tee. Since the ensemble is so simple, I often include a scarf to make the outfit more put together. 

I think everyone needs a circle scarf in his or her wardrobe – it’s pure genius. It can be worn so many different ways and can keep you warm too! I have no accessories, no special colors, but this outfit is wearable for many occasions. 

If the weather isn’t going to be fierce, well I better make sure my outfit is.

The Craze: Visiting the velvet underground

The Craze is a trend report bringing you the latest (and, duh, the greatest) in beauty and style. 

You may only remember it from your gymnastics and dance costumes when you were younger but velvet is back — in a big way.

This fall, toss your misconceptions  out the window; velvet is everywhere. Some may think this rich fabric is dated and should only be worn by your grandmother at a Christmas party, but worn the right way, velvet can take any look from dull to divinely luxurious.

 

Even Vogue chose velvet as one of this season’s most exciting emerging trends. Designers like Marc Jacobs and Armani revitalized the material on the runway this fall with deep jewel tones and classic silhouettes.  Here are some of our favorite velvet looks from this season:

But no need to be intimidated by these high-priced looks. There’s plenty of velvet to go around for the average college student, like a red velvet blazer from H&M, or these velvet leggings from Forever 21.

So how can you wear it?  Spruce up your day time attire by pairing skinny jeans, and a sheer tee with this black velvet blazer, also from Forever 21. For an even simpler way to bring the trend to your everyday look, try pairing some black velvet leggings with an over-sized tee and some simple flats.

Take the look from day to night with a mini and a pair of sky high heels.  If you’re daring, take your nighttime look to the next level with a velvet dress like this one from DVF at Bergdorf Goodman. Or for a lower price option, this black dress from American Apparel. 

Keep in mind that you ARE wearing velvet so try to keep the rest of your look simple. But, don’t be afraid to accessories with some chain necklaces or a leather belt.

This look is aaaaaaaaall about luxury.

My goal for this crisp autumn day was simple: make it to Psych feeling comfortable without looking sloppy.

I decided to channel the season with some classic fall colors. An oversized maroon tank - coupled with my favorite pair of dark skinnies - was an easy way to bring the rich colors of fall to my outfit. 

I spiced up the deep hues with a sparkly gold cardi in keeping with the autumn palette. A pair of my most comfortable black leather boots was a nice alternative to the Uggs that are all too frequently sported around campus (you know who you are).  

I accessorized the look with a tarnished dark silver necklace to play off the bright gold cardigan. Lastly, it was time to add a bit of interest to the outfit with a tan belt, shown off with a half tuck of my tank.  

The half-tuck is a great way to look effortlessly polished; it is the perfect mix between sloppy and chic.

As per usual I was running late for class, so I grabbed my tortoise shell Clubmasters for a finishing touch and cruised on over to class.
