Rag Report: Shining Twilight Star

Rag Report dives under the covers of fashion publications to rant or rave about all the glossy goodness.

Twilight star Kristen Stewart is featured on the cover this month’s Vogue. Eve MacSweeney delved into who Kristen Stewart truly is in her article “Coming on Strong.” The 20-year-old actress has already accomplished a lot including her role as Bella in the Twilight Saga. However, this young woman does not flaunt her successes. She has a mellow attitude and strives for nothing but the best.

In the first photo, featured in the letter from the editor, Anna Wintour states how Stewart has “made a generational link with girls all over the world.” In the photo, shot by Mario Testino, she is wearing Proenza Schouler. She sits cross-legged and is slightly hunched over making her seem approachable and open to conversation. Her facial expression is neutral and relaxed, allowing her natural beauty to shine through. It’s no wonder so many girls feel they can connect with her.

Stewart’s next photo is with Proenza Schouler’s Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez. She is wearing one of their dresses in a deep earth brown and glowing sunset orange. There is emotion in her face and she is holding her two hands together. This photo allows us to truly see Stewart and relate to her like millions of others.

In the last photo, Stewart’s hands are almost exactly like the previous photo indicating that it is her natural stance. She is dressed in a tweed bustier dress by Proenza Schouler in a bold and rebellious pattern to match her personality. Stewart is who she is and has a certain edge to her, which can clearly be seen through the way she stands and how she portrays herself.

Stewart gives off an edgy vibe and isn’t afraid to show the world. She rarely shows her smile and is often “accused of being downbeat and defensive” during her appearances in public. Nonetheless, perhaps these seemingly negative qualities are what make her so relatable. Girls and young women are able to relate to her as she shines in her role of Bella.

Fashion Czar: Remembering Alexander McQueen

Fashion Czar is a comment from the Editor, Phillip Crook.

So, most of you've heard by now: we lost Alexander McQueen today. The British designer committed suicide in his home by reportedly hanging himself. McQueen's office confirmed the reports this morning saying, "It is a tragic loss. We are not making a comment at this time out of respect for the McQueen family."

McQueen was perhaps the most inspiring talent in the fashion world. Many spoke of him, and undoubtedly will continue to, as a genius. His RTW spring 2010 show in Paris last October was a collage of all that makes fashion exciting: imagination, innovation, whimsy and glamour.

Vogue Editor Anna Wintour released a statement saying, "We are devastated to learn of the death of Alexander McQueen, one of the greatest talents of his generation. He brought a uniquely British sense of daring and aesthetic fearlessness to the global stage of fashion. In such a short career, Alexander McQueen’s influence was astonishing — from street style, to music culture and the world’s museums. His passing marks an insurmountable loss."

New York Magazine's fashion blog, The Cut, already created a retrospective gallery of McQueen's work dating from 2001. With New York Fashion Week already underway, the designer is certainly on everyone's mind. As the community moves to London, Milan and Paris in the coming month, this may likely unfold as the season to remember McQueen.

The Orange Carpet: Serious with a touch of funk

The Orange Carpet scours SU to roll out the best of campus style (die, hoodies, die!).

We love following celebs, because they are always pushing the fashion boundaries. But in wanting something more authentic, we turn to our schoolmates for inspiration.

Nicole Hering, a senior CRS major, happened to catch our eye with her funky, yet serious vibe. You can usually find her wearing an artsy style with a plaid shirt, crotched hat, and skinny jeans.

Though dressed for a meeting, Nicole still managed to add some quirk to her outfit. The black ensemble is broken up with a white Haynes tank, while her gold earrings and white and gold necklace keep the look from becoming dreary.

You’ve all heard the saying: All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Well in fashion, drab looks with no personality make Anna Wintour scowl

Nicole managed to create an outfit that's smart, yet distinctive with her JCrew black sweater, stockings, and necklace; skirt from New Look, Tahari shoes and earrings from a street vendor in London.

We'd personally rock this look to an interview. It tastefully shows some personality without being flashy. Remember, you don’t have to lose your individuality when entering the work force. Anything you couldn’t write on your resume can be stated by your clothes!

Biz Buzz: It's Wintour in the White House

Biz Buzz keeps its fabulously accessorized ear to the ground to provide breaking fashion news coverage.

Anna Wintour, the highly recognized Editor-in-Chief of Vogue and prominent fashion icon, has now been added to the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities.

The committee offers the President suggestions on “how to expand the role of arts in society,” according to WWD.

A fashion editorial interpretation of Anna Wintour's signature style.

Our stylish First Lady Michelle Obama is Honorary Chair of the committee, leading 24 other newly appointed members including Yo-Yo Ma, Kerry Washington, Edward Norton and Sarah Jessica Parker.

For those of you who have been living under a rock for the past 20 years, Wintour has been at the helm of Vogue since 1988 and has contributed to fund raising efforts for AIDS research and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

In related news, Wintour also celebrated her 60th birthday earlier this week.

We’re happy fashion’s finally entering the White House in proper, well, fashion — we just hope Ms. Wintour isn’t giving up her Vogue throne just yet…things just wouldn’t be the same.
